Literacy Tutoring: Therapeutic Approach

  • Each therapy session is diagnostic, prescriptive, and individualized.  Sessions are created based on formal and informal assessment data.  The student's progress is continually monitored and lessons are adapted so that curricular content and  teaching methods meet each student's specific needs.  Each concept is taught explicitly and directly. 
  • Along with supporting each student's growth in literacy, this approach aims to build confidence and increase motivation by giving students the skills that they need to develop their full potential as learners.  Positive reinforcement and celebration of student success is an important part of each session!

Multi-Sensory Techniques and Language Based Instruction

  •  The approach engages multiple senses simultaneously to help reinforce learning. This includes auditory (hearing), visual (seeing), and kinesthetic (touching/moving) activities. For example, students might participate in tactile games, tracing, finger-tapping,  while also saying sounds orally.
  • The approach focuses on the structure of language, including phonology (sounds), morphology (word parts), syntax (sentence structure), and semantics (meaning). Understanding how language works is essential for reading and spelling proficiency 

Sequential and Systematic

  •  Instruction is highly structured, beginning with the most basic elements of language and gradually progressing to more complex concepts. Reinforcement and review are built into each session to ensure security of skills.  
  • The approach is cumulative and builds on previously learned material, ensuring that new learning is connected to and reinforces what has already been taught. This cumulative process helps students integrate and retain new information
